I do Chicano art to insure the heroic struggle of the Mexicans who are not from Mexico is recorded accurately by us and does not depend on the media and the historical biases depicted in textbooks. I create Chicano art so that that worldview is appreciated, respected, and not misunderstood. And I choose to do that from right here -- from my barrio. Its what inspires me. It is here where I find the true stories of what we have been subjected to. And it is here that I discover the courageous combinations that embody our indigenous tenacity for survival against the staggering odds of racial and political oppression without succumbing to victimization: We are not dirty and lazy, and pachucos were not reefer smoking draft dodgers, and cholos and cholas arent all gang bangers.
