Xóchitl Cristina Gil

The creative process is a personal act that is informed by all that we experience. The works are reflections of the layering and interaction of the conscious and unconscious. Because I am a female artist in a society that values and sexualizes youth, my work has become about merging the "girl" and "woman" and juxtaposing the perceived interactions of each.

Employing the tradition of mystical realism, I recall ideas of love and lust, sensuality and sexuality, rather than the established 'Chicano' political themes. I look and translate the world through the eyes of a Mexicana/Chicana/Americana and talk about my individual experience. Through this process I produce narrative dialogues about self-discovery, abandonment, and mental and spiritual freedom.

The pieces included here are about process.
