About the Performers:   

Dr. Peter Garcia is an ethnomusicologist and folklorist whose research and concert performances include popular and traditional Mexican music(s) and dance throughout the Southwest Borderlands including the United States and Northern Mexico. His articles and other publications have appeared in Ethnomuscology, The Latin American Review, Bilingual Review  and Tradicion Revista. He is the Senior Subject Editor for the Greenwood Encyclopedia of Latino Popular Culture (forthcoming October 2004).  He performs regularly in concert with Norma Talamante as Sol de Oro. Dr. García is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at Arizona State University and is on the 2004-2005 Speakers Bureau  for the Arizona Humanities Council.

Norma Talamante is a senior at ASU, majoring in family studies and child development. She has performed various Mexican, Chicana/o, and American folk and popular musical genres including: Mariachi, Norteño (Mexican Country-Western), Trio, and Sol de Oro (Duet). Norma has performed throughout the borderlands including Greater Mexico, Tucson, San Diego, San Francisco, and throughout the Valley of the Sun. After graduation, Norma intends to continue developing her musical talents, concerts, and recordings.  She also intends to begin working with abused indigent children.
