This automobile was called “La Cucaracha” and was the inspiration for the song. It was often out of gasoline and had to be towed by horses. The original verse went La Cucaracha no puede caminar, porque le falta gasolina para andar. Later the verse was changed to either porque le falta las patitas de atrás or marijuana que fumar.
