Texas native Leticia Huerta (born Leticia Venegas) came to the arts only after preparing for, and beginning, a career in medicine. She studied chemistry and biology at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, graduating with a B.A. in biology in 1976. After marrying and completing medical technology school, she began working for a hospital and simultaneously studying art at night at San Antonio College. Soon she transferred to the University of Texas, San Antonio, where she earned a B.F.A. in painting in 1985. This led to local exhibitions of her work and to printmaking classes at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. In 1987 Huerta’s family moved to Dallas, whereupon she expanded her exhibition activities, showing her work in both San Antonio and Dallas. In 1989 she began graduate study at Southern Methodist University, earning her M.F.A. in painting in 1991. Still producing and exhibiting her works, she began to teach art classes through a city program and also worked on a long-term public art project, helping to design transit stations for the Dallas Rapid Transit System. In 1998, when her family moved back to San Antonio, Huerta began teaching again and took on another public art project, while continuing to produce and exhibit her visual works.
