I will be holding monthly workshops facilitating the creation of personal shrine boxes. This is an art form that I have worked with over the last ten years. These "cajitas" (as they are called) * evoke sacred space in your office or home * restore enchantment to ordinary places * nurture the spirit of creativity and * honor your connection to the great mystery. Cost: $45 includes wooden box, art supplies, decorative items, and guided instruction. Payment (cash only) is due in full the day of the workshop. While at the workshop, you also have the opportunity to visit and relax in my personal meditation garden. Workshops can only accomodate 10 persons as this affords me the opportunity to give personal attention to each participant. Remember, you will be creating your personal shrine box with items that bespeak your connection to the sacred and/or divine in your life. As a participant you must bring the following items: 1) a key figure/image/symbol that is evocative of your connection to the Great Mystery 2) 4 objects that respectively represent the elements of fire, air, water, and earth. 3) Any other items that you may wish to place in your sacred box. 4) special cloth or fabric if you wish to use it as a backdrop. Please bear in mind that you will be working with a space no larger than 8 x 10 inches. Choose your items accordingly. Please e-mail inquiries to retablos@cox.net. "Slightly Erotic: Mostly Love" - An art exhibit about love The Avenue 50 Studio is pleased to announce an art exhibit of "slightly erotic, mostly love" art works by artists Michael Amescua, Rudy Calderon, Maria Castro, Jose Cortez, Alfredo de Batuc, Sam Hernandez, Michael Odell, Oliverio, Jose Orozco, Sara Remetch, Frank Romero, Betty Wan, and Adrian Wong-Shu. A reception for the artists will be held on February 14, 2003 from 7-10 p.m. "Slightly Erotic: Mostly Love" lays bare a variety of media from playful sculptures by Maria Castro and Jose Orozco to small erotic etchings by Adrian Wong-Shu. Photography by Jose Cortez, Sam Hernandez, Michael Odell and Sara Remetch explore the sensuousness of the human body. Michael Amescua, known for his metal sculptures, crafts a mythological playland out of steel, forming a six-foot tall divider. Balancing this exhibition where eroticism and love merge, a colorful mural-sized painting by collaborators Frank Romero and Alfredo de Batuc fits in nicely. This timely Valentine exhibit invites amorous dialogue and visual involvement, supporting the phrase, "make love not war". Please join us to celebrate love.
