Transcending
the past and the present, Mary Antonia Wood's paintings and constructions
also transcend the boundaries of painting and sculpture. Her work reflects
a deep interest in the eternal mysteries of existence, which know no beginning
or end life and death, darkness and light, time and space, nature and the
supernatural. "My work is an act of discovery
a journey through mystery, legend, and myth. It is a sort of spiritual
archeology, which eventually leads to the barest elements, the hidden essence
within," the artist states.

cultural and artistic events. There are exhibitions, plays, concerts, cinema,
music, opera, theatre, dance, plastic
arts, cinema, literature and all sorts of events, turning the city into a
hotbed of culture. The International Cervantes Festival (FIC) is the most
important artistic and cultural event in Mexico and in all Latin America.
It has been held without interruption since 1972, the year it was created.
Its venue is the city of Guanajuato, the capital of the state of the same

Mario Castillo: minimalist reassertions (through Oct. 13, 2004)
Chicago Glass Curtain Gallery is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition
with Mario Castillo. A pioneer in the Chicago muralist movement (first mural
he worked on was in 1964), Castillo turned to minimalism in the early 1970s.
During this period he created unique works that not only explored minimalist
issues concerning perception and art, but also universal human issues with
a Latino-Mexican sensibility. In Mario Castillo: minimalist reassertions,
Castillo reclaims, reprocesses, and transforms these works and concepts, asserting
the notion that artistic issues from the past are valid in the present.

Politics in Northeast Los Angeles" through the efforts of artists, activists,
and citizens concerned with local culture, politics, history and ecology,
the Avenue 50 Studio proudly participates in The October Surprise. We will
be offering our neighbors a chance to glimpse into the political minds of
eight LA artists working their political art through the medium of altars.
Participating artists include: Linda Arreola, Ann Brace, Silvia Capistran,
Tina Gulotta, Jennifer Murphy, Margaret Guzman/Cristina Shallcross and Cindy
Suriyani.
Please join us at the opening day reception of Altaring Course at the Avenue

Avenue 50 Studio
131 No. Avenue 50
Highland Park, CA 90042
(323) 258-1435
Dates of Exhibition: October 8 through November 7, 2004
Linda Arreola fashioned “Star-Spangled Banner” out of bricks in
response to her concern regarding the flag’s symbolism as intransigent
power. The Avenue 50 Studio is continuing to exhibit political altars by artists
Linda Arreola, Ann Brace, Silvia Capistran, Tina Gulotta, Jennifer Murphy,
Margaret Guzman/Cristina Shallcross, and Cindy Suriyani. Each of these altars
raises questions about war, the border, environmental issues, the disappeared
women of Juarez, and our star spangled banner—the flag.
Please stop by the Avenue 50 Studio to view these altars that pray for change
in our political views.
